Matinee Heroes is a podcast dedicated to exploring hero cinema - from adventurers, heroes, and superheroes; from Jedi to buddy cops; from the Wild West, to the distant past, to futures both hopeful and dystopian, from ancient lands to the deepest reaches of outer space. In a time when we need heroes more than ever, Alan and Craig will try to understand just what makes our cinematic heroes tick, and how we can use that heroism in our everyday life.

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

When Dr. Dave Bowman and other astronauts are sent on a mysterious mission, their ship's computer system, HAL, begins to display increasingly strange behavior, leading up to a tense showdown between man and machine that results in a mind-bending trek through space and time.

SCHINDLER'S LIST

Businessman Oskar Schindler arrives in Krakow in 1939, ready to make his fortune from World War II. After joining the Nazi party primarily for political convenience, he staffs his factory with Jewish workers for similarly pragmatic reasons. When the SS begins exterminating Jews in the Krakow ghetto, Schindler arranges to have his workers protected to keep his factory in operation, but soon realizes that in so doing, he is also saving innocent lives.

Alan and Craig discuss how reluctant heroes are made when their conscience won't allow any more, Alan is at Hullabaloo while Craig attends FanX and one of the most important movies ever made "Schindler's list" on this week's Matinee Heroes.

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

Assigned to Arabia during World War I, T.E. Lawrence courageously unites the warring Arab fractions into a strong guerilla front and leads them to brilliant victories in treacherous desert battlefields where they battle against the Ottoman Turks.

When don Corleone’s youngest son, Michael, reluctantly joins the Mafia, he becomes involved in the inevitable cycle of violence and betrayal. Although Michael tries to maintain a normal relationship with his wife, Kay, he is drawn deeper into the family business.
