Matinee Heroes is a podcast dedicated to exploring hero cinema - from adventurers, heroes, and superheroes; from Jedi to buddy cops; from the Wild West, to the distant past, to futures both hopeful and dystopian, from ancient lands to the deepest reaches of outer space. In a time when we need heroes more than ever, Alan and Craig will try to understand just what makes our cinematic heroes tick, and how we can use that heroism in our everyday life.

THE NEVERENDING STORY

On his way to school, Bastian ducks into a bookstore to avoid bullies. Sneaking away with a book called "The Neverending Story," Bastian begins reading the novel about Fantasia, a fantasy land threatened by "The Nothing," a darkness that destroys everything it touches. The kingdom needs the help of a human child to survive. When Bastian reads a description of himself in the book, he begins to wonder if Fantasia is real and needs him to survive.

DRAGONSLAYER

A horrifying fire-breathing dragon terrorizes the sixth-century British countryside. The only hope for the beleaguered citizens is Ulrich, an aging sorcerer. But when Ulrich is killed, the task to confront the dragon falls to the wizard's apprentice, Galen whose mission is complicated by resistance from the king - and by falling in love - but his biggest challenge comes when he is suddenly face to face with the dreaded beast, Vermithrax Pejorative.

TRON

When talented computer engineer Kevin Flynn finds out that an executive at his company has been stealing his work, he tries to hack into the system. However, Flynn is transported into the digital world, where he has to face off against Sark, and the imposing Master Control Program. Aided by Tron (and Yori, Flynn becomes a freedom fighter for the oppressed programs of the grid.

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS

the part second of the Tolkien trilogy, Frodo Baggins and the other members of the Fellowship continue on their sacred quest to destroy the One Ring - but on separate paths.   Frodo and Sam continue their journey towards Mordor to destroy the One Ring, meeting and joined by Gollum, the ring's former owner. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli come to the war-torn nation of Rohan and are reunited with the resurrected Gandalf, before fighting against the legions of the treacherous wizard Saruman at the Battle of Helm's Deep. Merry and Pippin escape capture, meet Treebeard the Ent, and help to plan an attack on Isengard, fortress of Saruman.

LORD OF THE RINGS: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING

A shy young hobbit named Frodo Baggins inherits a simple gold ring. He knows the ring has power, but not that he alone holds the secret to the survival--or enslavement--of the entire world.  Now Frodo, accompanied by a wizard, an elf, a dwarf, two men and three loyal hobbit friends, must become the greatest hero the world has ever known to save the land and the people he loves.
